Contemporary Art Museum for Fondazione
Feltrinelli in Milan _Italy
Call for Ideas
2012
This Call for Ideas involves the construction of a Museum of Contemporary Art in Milan in Via Volta.
The inclusion of new volumes in the Milanese context requires particular attention: it has a compact, high density specificity, in fact, the Milanese urban canons are very recognizable and very defined, especially in the on-street facades, the recurrant courtyard typology, the internal backyards and balconies etc.
Furthermore the surface allowed by the program imposed is much lower than that of the given area, with the consequence of having to adopt precise choices of placement of the volumes in this completely free area. I chose a double court typology, with one of the two courts halfly open to face the long garden. The whole building is enclosed by two long walls that compact the main fronts and draw access, openings and the profile of the volumes themselves.
In contrast to these ‘closed’ facades, almost all interior fronts are fully glazed and the top floor has big skylights to ensure the museum environments a great natural light.
On the ground floor are located all ‘service’ areas (cafeteria, conference room, offices,
bookshop and reading room), while the upper floor houses the exhibition halls.
